Dear Family
Hello parents! My name is Rossana and I have been a childminder for many years now. I have always enjoyed working with children and in recent years have decided to specialise professionally in this area. I am a student at St. Nicholas Montessori College in Dun Laoghaire where we study the Montessori method through theory and practice. We focus on the optimal development of the child, intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally, in order to promote the child's independence. For the past two years, I have lived and worked with a family with three fantastic children. I was only supposed to stay with them for one year but the family and I got on so well that we decided to extend. Every day we work together to create a stimulating and educational schedule for the children, including activities, homework and playdates. I take care of picking them up from school, taking them to the park, preparing lunchboxes, taking them to various activities, helping them with their homework and occasionally babysitting and putting them to bed. I have also recently completed an internship in a crèche, where I helped out in the 1-3 year old class. In my spare time I like to carve out time for my friends. It is very important to me to be a good friend and to be there if they need support, to let off steam or just to be distracted. Since living in Dublin, I have met a lot of people and I think it is of paramount importance to be there for others, especially people who have recently moved and need emotional support. My two biggest passions are reading and travelling, which I think are closely related. Both can give you different perspectives of the world and experience of life.
My Favourite Memory
One of the best memories I have is undoubtedly related to my first birthday celebrated here in Dublin. I hadn't planned anything extraordinary that day; it was a very ordinary Thursday. (I would have celebrated with my friends over the weekend). After finishing work, my host mum sent me a message asking me to drop the little girl off at an address, where I would meet her. It was close to home, so we walked. We found out that the address matched an Italian restaurant (like me). Upon entering, we found the whole family sitting at a table full of balloons, small confetti hearts, and two huge helium balloons. They had planned a surprise party for me! The children were super excited to show me cards they had handmade for me, with exactly the things they knew I liked. Each child also wanted to show me their own little gift, proud that they had chosen it. Lastly, the little one had the honor of choosing the cake for me: a cake with Elsa and Olaf from Frozen! The family went the extra mile to make everything perfect, such as choosing the Italian restaurant so I wouldn't miss home. For me, it is a very sweet memory, seeing how excited they were to celebrate and how they kept it a secret so that I wouldn't find out anything beforehand, is invaluable.
My Experience
As I have already mentioned, in recent years I have had the opportunity to work a lot with children. In 2017, I had an AuPair experience in London, where I was taking care of two little girls. It was my first experience abroad, with a different language and different family. I got along very well with the girls - we bonded a lot and I am still in touch with them. My duties were to pick up and take the girls from school, take them to activities, do homework and play with them. In 2021 I decided to repeat this experience but in a different place, here Dublin. Needless to say, I found myself in an even better situation, making me want to never leave. This started from the first moment my host family and I created a solid and healthy bond for the children. In the beginning I worked full-time taking care of just the 2-year-old in the morning, and then also her sister once she got out of school. Now I am only with them during the afternoons after school. I am extremely happy and satisfied with the bond I have created with them. We have had many experiences together, including spending two weeks together in France! In February I started the ECCE Level 6 course, a qualification to be able to teach in the creche accompanied by an internship in a 1-3 year old classroom, which I have completed. I decided to extend my studies by specialising in the Montessori method and am currently attending St. Nicholas Montessori College part-time.
